HOW WE SUPPORT THE ORCHESTRA

Meeting the Needs of the Orchestra and its Musicians

Although the Bandung Philharmonic’s accomplishments are astounding, the orchestra still needs help to reach its full musical potential. While 90-95% of the orchestra’s musicians are from Indonesia, personnel occasionally needs to be supplemented by musicians from other countries. Bringing musicians from outside the country adds substantially to fees and travel costs paid by the orchestra. Orchestral sound is dependent not only on the quality of the musicians themselves, but also on the quality of their equipment. Something as simple as new strings for a cello or reeds for a clarinet can make an enormous difference to a player. Professional-quality instruments and accessories are difficult to obtain in Indonesia. Orchestras traditionally own their own large percussion instruments like timpani, but this is an expense the Bandung Philharmonic has not been able to afford.

Meeting the Needs

The Bandung Philharmonic Foundation was established to help make this meaningful work happen. Giving to the Foundation supports:

  • Fees and travel expenses to bring expert musicians to Indonesia.

  • A collection of high-quality musical instruments and supplies that can be used by Bandung Philharmonic musicians during their tenure with the orchestra.

  • Ongoing musical outreach efforts.

  • Establishment of an endowment fund for the orchestra’s long-term financial stability.
